3 Simple steps to finding your Interior Design Style

Creating a home that reflects your personal interior design style is much easer then you think, read my top 3 steps to create your dream home today.

One: Look at what you have to discover your interior design style.

The foundations of your interior design style are already in your home, you might say I don’t own anything, but you will have a few things that will be a guide to your own interior design style already!

Step back and look at your favourite books and even apps and your favourite pieces of clothing, all these things are pieces of the puzzle in discovering your personal interior design style! Without even knowing it you are bringing together a look that you can draw from when it comes to your home, perhaps you only wear black clothes or you spend hours on Instagram scrolling through images of richly layered French country homes, all of this information will help you in discovering your interior design style.

The next step to take in discovering your personal interior design style is to find your personal style thread and then you can start to look at your home. From that favourite worn leather jacket which might be the inspiration for a sofa and that book you love based in London might be the beginning of your bedroom style richly layered in printed textiles with an eclectic mix of furniture!

Two: Add some of your personality.

The most personal interiors are filled with authenticity, personality and personal style! Now that you have the foundations of discovering your interior design style its time to make your home a personal reflection of you.

When your shopping for your home from furniture to art keep that thread flowing through everything you are buying, this not only creates cohesion, but it will make a home that truly reflects your personal interior design style. Keeping to your personal style thread also helps you to say focused on your personal style and you won’t as easily get distracted by current trends and fashions that really don’t reflect you but can be hard to not to be drawn into. A simple key to spotting a trend is to look at 3 different sources, from apps to shops and websites and if you see the same or a very similar thing in/on all of them, you have spotted the trend!

Discovering your personal interior design style will take time, so don’t stress about getting it right every time, we all make mistakes, but by starting with a little bit of a foundation you wont make as many, especially very big and expensive ones! You don’t want to rip out a perfectly good bathroom and replace it with a new green one, only to latter discover that a green bathroom makes you feel ill!

Three: Don’t be precious

A home that truly reflects you should be lived in and not some show home that is styled within an inch! This may seem like a strange statement from an interior designer and interior stylist, but believe me I’m not one for creating interiors that cant be lived in, no one really wants to spend hours making the bed or ironing the curtains, your home should be a place you can enjoy and relax.

By discovering your personal interior design style, you will be able to not only create a home that reflects your style, but also the way you live, that is the true key to a successful interior, you shouldn’t be worried about what others think of your home and finding your own personal interior design style will give you the confidence to truly be comfortable in your home and your own unique style!
