BEDROOM BLISS IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS!

As an interior designer and interior stylist, I am often asked how do I create a beautiful bedroom? Today I’m going to share five of my favourite ways to create a beautiful bedroom!

ONE – LINENS

Linens are amazing at transforming your bed, from season to season and day to day you can completely change the look and feel of your bedroom! Think outside the box, when choosing new linens, firstly look for quality, 100% cotton and linen are always the best. Play with tone, I don’t often use colour in my bedding, but layers of tone are a fantastic way to add a personal look and finally think about pattern, it can be subtle or bold, but think about what it brings to your interior, a bedroom that has no pattern or texture can look plain and feel as if it is missing something.

TWO – LAMPS

In my work as an interior designer and interior stylist lighting is one of the most important things in a room. For me it carries two functions, task lighting and ambient lighting. For a bedroom you need good lighting to get dressed, that’s your task lighting, but the most important lighting in a bedroom is ambient lighting! This lighting creates a mood, an atmosphere and brings warmth to your bedroom. The best way to introduce ambient lighting is through your bedside lamps. I like to use big lamps, they balance out the scale of a big bed, small lamps can feel lost and bitsy. They also ground your bedroom and make it feel settled, like it’s a place for rest and not just a camp that you will be leaving in the morning!

THREE – COLOUR

I am endlessly amazed at the power of colour to transform a room and I think it is especially important in a bedroom! When choosing a colour for your bedroom think about what a bedroom is used for, sleep! So, look for colour that have a soft hue, always with a warm base and never too white! My favourite colours for bedrooms are; soft grey tones, warm putty tones, dark almost black navy’s and rich rusty tones, their power to create a space for rest is amazing!

FOUR – LAYERS

Layers, layers, layers! Even in the most minimal of spaces there are many layers, so don’t think that your room needs to be cluttered! Every element in your bedroom is a layer, from your bed, to your window dressings! The key to make layers work for your interior is to create relationships between them, I find the easiest way to achieve this is by keeping to a tight use of materials & colours, by repeating the same palette and keeping it to a minimal base you can have as many layers as you like without them feeling messy or cluttered!!

FIVE – SOUL

Adding soul to your bedroom is something that is hard to explain, but the key to any successful interior is always soul! I find that many people struggle to add soul to their homes, but it’s not as hard as you might think. Look for pieces that you have a reaction too, that somehow grab you, it can be art or sculpture, colours or fabrics, but these elements are what truly brings soul to your space and gives it its own and your own individual style!
